Reaction vessels in the chemical industry

Resin – an important raw material

In the manufacture of resins, different basic materials are mixed with solvents and caused to react through the input of process heat. The resins produced during this process serve as raw materials for a broad spectrum of products – from the automotive industry to the manufacture of toys.
Process temperatures over 150°C (302°F), vacuum or high gauge pressure, as well as buildup of viscous products are conditions that place tremendous demands on the implemented measurement technology.

Level measurement with VEGAPULS 63

Contactless level measurement with the radar sensor VEGAPULS 63 is ideal for applications in the manufacture of reaction products. Because the measurement takes place without direct contact with the medium, practically no buildup can form on the sensor. The radar measurement is not affected by process conditions such as temperature, pressure or gas overlay, and delivers accurate results even when agitators cause strong product turbulence. Since radar technology always measures the distance to the product surface, the measurement is also not affected by product density changes during the process. Especially when corrosive products are involved, the protective PFTE cover guarantees optimum chemical resistance. At process temperatures over 150°C (302°F), the VEGAPULS 62 with temperature adapter is the ideal solution.

VEGASWING 63 for level detection

Due to its universal applicability, the vibrating level switch VEGASWING 63 is also well suited for use in reaction vessels. Even process conditions such as high viscosity, temperatures up to 250°C (482°F) and pressures up to 64 bar (928 psig) do not impair the functionality of the sensor.
Versions with high-resistance materials or enamel coating are available for varying degrees of product orrosiveness. VEGASWING can be implemented in safety-relevant applications up to SIL 2 and, in redundant systems, up to SIL 3.

Foaming products – no problem for differential pressure measurement

The advantages of radar technology cannot always be applied in different reactors. If a lot of foam is generated in the reaction, the microwaves are absorbed and no reflection signal can be evaluated. Under these circumstances,  differential pressure measurement with two pressure transducers offers many advantages. Suitable also for high  temperatures, VEGABAR 61 measures the hydrostatic pressure of the liquid column and is not influenced by foam on the product surface. In pressurised reaction vessels, the resulting difference between overlaid pressure and column pressure yields the differential pressure, and thus the level.
