Lime kiln optimal filling saves costs
Whereas in cement production the raw flour is burned into clinker in long rotary furnaces, the burning of lime is carried out mainly in vertical topload kilns. In this process, the kiln is filled from above and the burned limestone is removed at the lower end of the kiln. Optimal flling is an important prerequisite for efficient operation of the kilns. Due to the partly high temperatures and rough operating conditions, high requirements are placed on the filling level measurement.
Contactless level measurement with VEGAPULS 68
In the past, radiometric measuring systems or mechanical plumb line systems, which were driven by complex hydraulic systems, were often used for level measurement in the lime kiln. The robust radar sensor VEGAPULS 68 delivers reliable measuring results in the lime kiln, notwithstanding the extreme conditions that prevail there. Although the temepratures can reach up to 200 °C (392 °F) during the charging of the furnaces, VEGAPULS 68 requires no additional cooling. The sensor detects the surface of the limestone rocks with certainty and thus provides important data for effective operation of the kiln. The contactless measurement is maintenance-free and does not require any additional servicing.
